The power of iPod
The text develops the idea that iPod has totally changed the entire world.
The first part is devoted to the launching on the market, and the second, to the influence on identity, culture, and commerce.
Firstly, the writer points out that the iPod arrived in 2001 and within 5 years, more than 60 million of units were sold. Moreover, according to a survey, the iPod is more popular on college campuses than beer !
The striking fact is that the iPod has changed the world on several points of view.
The first one it's on identity. Indeed, what's on iPod provides musical tastes and so reveals characters of each ones. That's why we can say "Playlist is character"
Then, the writer describes the evolution of the way to listen to music.
In the 50s, was born the 45rpm single but this one allowed only 3 minutes playing. In the 60s, it was surpassed by the vynil.
In the 90s, the CD arrived, allowing place for 12 tracks. Meanwhile, those are generally not all good.
Then, in 2001, with the iPod and the "à la carte" option, people could buy/download only the good songs.
Thirdly, it has an influence on the behaviour.
In 1974, a sociologist used the term "mobile privatization" for people who create technological bubbles around themselves. This phenomenon is a way to escape from the world and it has been stepped up thanks to the Sony's walkman in 1979, and the iPod in 2001, which is a really portable cocoon.
To conclude, the writer moves on to Podcast (created in 2004) which allow to donwload tracks on internet and also create mini-broadcats available on internet. Since 2005, videos and series are available for only 1.99 $. And that's really interesting because there are not interruption of advertising; videos can be donwloaded anytime and viewed wherever we want.
