I had to stay two days under observation.
Are you back at work?
No, I have to rest for another week.

TRACK 46
What do you generally have for breakfast in your country?
Well, a traditional English breakfast generally consists of sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms,… but nowadays many people just have a continental breakfast.
What do you mean?
Well, fruit juice, cereal or toast with marmalade or rolls with butter and jam with a cup of tea or coffee.
What about lunch?
Well, it depends. During the week, we have a snack from home and eat it at work; or we have a light meal in a pub or a café: there they serve all kinds of sandwiches or salad but also hot food, like omelettes, either plain or with ham and cheese with a piece of bread.

TRACK 47
And when you say you have tea, what is that exactly.
Oh afternoon tea you mean? Well, it can be sandwiches, cakes or pancakes; But you can also go to a tearoom where they serve scones with cream and all kinds of pastry with a nice pot of tea.
What about the evening meal?
Ah! That’s generally the main meal of the day, when the family eats together, so mostly meat, vegetables and potatoes. It is called supper.

TRACK 48
At the pub.
Hm. This is a nice pub. Do you come here often?
Yes. About once a week. Now, this is on me. What will you have? Beer or soft drink?
Er… I think I’ll have a pint.
Lager? Bitter?
A pint of bitter, please.
OK. Would you fancy some crisps or peanuts or anything to eat?
No, thank you. I’m not hungry really.
Here you are.
Thanks. Cheers.
Cheers. Oh I was thirsty.

TRACK 49
Good evening. We’ve booked a table for two. My name is Harris.
Yes sir. This way please.
Could we see the menu, please?
Certainly, here it is.
What would you like to start with?
Let’s see: home-made onion soup, fresh melon, prawn cocktail, seafood salad, avocado with shrimps, asparagus with a butter sauce… I’ll have the asparagus. What about you?
I’m not sure. I can’t decide. Oh, I think I’ll have the same. It sounds very nice.
And what shall we have for the main course?
Er, let’s see what’s on the menu: steak, lamb chops with mint sauce, grilled fish, roast beef, veal escalope, roast pork in mustard sauce…

TRACK 50
Ah! Here is the waiter.
Are you ready to order now?
Yes, we will like the asparagus to starter followed by the lamb chops for my friend and a steak for me, please.
Certainly. How would you like your steak? Rare? Medium? Well-done?
Rare, please.
And what vegetables would you like? We have got potatoes –boiled, baked or French fried – and they are served with peas, cabbage, cauliflower or beans.
What about baked potatoes and cauliflower?
Yes, sounds nice.
Yes Sir. And to drink?
Let’s have a look at the wine-list… What do you recommend?
The house red is very nice.
All right. And some mineral water, please.

We’ve got chocolate cake, apple pie, fresh strawberries with vanilla ice cream...
I’ll have the strawberries, it sounds delicious.
Waiter, could we have the bill, please?
Certainly, sir.
Is service included in the bill?
No, it isn’t, sir.
Can I pay by credit card?
Yes, of course.

TRACK 52
Shall I take your coats.
Oh, thank you.
What about a drink before dinner?
Yes please. But no alcohol; I’ll have an orange juice… or a coke, if you have any.
Sit down everybody! I’ve cooked a typical English dish: chicken pie.
Mm… it smells delicious.
Do you help yourself to some vegetables.
Thank you.
Mike, could you pour the wine, please?
Mm, this pie tastes wonderful. How do you make it?
Well, you put pieces of chicken into a dish with some gravy, cover with pastry and you cook it in the oven.
Mm, lovely. Could you pass the salt and the pepper, please?
Here you are.
